Institutions in Sharjah are set to introduce chess in several schools as the emirate actively promotes the game among students to discover new talents. The world's largest chess club, Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, is collaborating with the UAE Chess Federation to increase interest in chess among schools and students across the emirate.

"Schools are crucial in nurturing and preparing new players. We are encouraging schools to embrace this role and promote chess among students throughout the emirate," said Sheikh Dr Khalid bin Hamid Al Qasimi, President of the UAE Arab Chess Federation and Chairman of the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club in an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times. "We plan to expand our initiatives across Sharjah and aim to reach all schools to uncover new talents," he added.

Sheikh Dr Khalid reminisced about accompanying his father to the club as a child. "I've been playing chess since I was a child, as my father was the Vice President of the UAE Chess Federation. I started playing at the age of nine," he said. Despite his busy schedule, he manages to play a few rounds daily with friends or colleagues.

Highlighting the strategic nature of chess, Sheikh Dr Khalid emphasized that it enhances critical thinking and practical skills. "The more strategies and plans one has, the more successful they will be in this mentally stimulating game," he noted. He also stressed the importance of expanding chess clubs to promote the sport.

At the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, efforts are underway to increase interest in chess across the UAE. The club's chess academy helps develop skills and abilities among expats and supports talent. Seasonal tournaments in the academy refine expertise for different age groups, attracting a high demand for participation.

Sheikh Dr Khalid believes that young people should engage more in chess, which is crucial for time management, good planning, and developing mental and intellectual skills. "Chess enriches the mind and encourages unconventional thinking," he added. Sharjah will host the Arab Individual Chess Championship and the Rapid & Blitz Chess Championship from November 7 to 17, 2024, aiming to attract participants from 22 countries affiliated with the Arab Chess Federation.
