The creator of Sharjah's popular 'rain street' has pledged to employ special equipment to cool the hourly artificial downpours. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Obaid Al Tunaiji revealed that the water used for these artificial rains was warm. 'We aim to cool the rains to reduce the water temperature further, enhancing the experience for visitors,' stated the Emirati.
Zawaya Walk in Sharjah, lined with palm trees, has become a social media sensation since it started offering free artificial rain shows to all visitors. These shows, complete with thunder-like sound effects for a more authentic feel, last around five minutes each and run every hour from 9am to 12pm, and again from 5pm to 11pm. Al Tunaiji assured that the water used in these shows is 'clean and sterilized.'
This shopping hub is a favorite hangout not just for its rain shows but also for its variety of retail outlets, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The open layout features an outdoor walkway, an artificial lake, and a bridge linking the two sides of the complex.
The concept of the rain shows originated from a desire to boost visitor numbers during the summer. 'We began by planting trees to provide shade and reduce heat,' explained Al Tunaiji. Over 300 trees were planted recently to create a more pleasant environment. While considering misting fans for cooling, concerns about increased humidity led to the exploration of artificial rain as a cooler alternative.
After finalizing the idea, the team of engineers implemented the plan tailored to the site's needs, rather than outsourcing to specialized companies. As the UAE experiences peak summer temperatures exceeding 50ºC, many activities have moved indoors. However, destinations like Zawaya Walk offer a refreshing outdoor experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the sun without the intense heat.
