Sharjah's 'rain street' at Zawaya Walk has become a popular topic, and it's set to improve. The mastermind behind this trending city feature, Obaid Al Tunaiji, has pledged to employ special equipment to make the hourly artificial rains cooler. In an interview with Khaleej Times, Al Tunaiji mentioned that the team observed the water used for the artificial rain was warm. He stated, "We will cool the rains further to decrease the water temperature, enhancing the experience for visitors." Al Tunaiji assured that the water used in the artificial rain is "clean and sterilized."
The palm tree-lined Zawaya Walk in Sharjah has gained viral attention on social media since it began offering free artificial rain shows to all visitors this summer. This allows visitors to enjoy a walk in the intense heat without overheating, with or without an umbrella. The rain shows, complete with thunder-like sound effects for a realistic experience, last about five minutes each. These shows run hourly from 9am to 12pm and again from 5pm to 11pm.
The shopping area has become a favored spot for residents, not just for the free rain shows but also due to its variety of retail outlets, shops, restaurants, and cafes. The open complex features an outdoor walkway, an artificial lake, and a bridge connecting the two ends of the building. The idea for the rain shows originated from Al Tunaiji and other developers noticing a low visitor turnout during the summer. "We brainstormed ways to attract visitors even in summer. The initial step was planting trees for shade and heat reduction," said Al Tunaiji. Over 300 trees have been planted recently to create a more comfortable environment.
The developers also explored using misting fans for a cooling effect but were concerned about potential humidity. They then considered artificial rains, known for their cooling properties. Instead of hiring external companies, their team of engineers implemented the plan to meet the site's specific needs. As temperatures in the UAE soar above 50ºC, many activities move indoors. However, destinations like Zawaya Walk offer a respite, allowing visitors to enjoy the outdoors without excessive heat.
