Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has declared his retirement from cricket, marking the end of a career where he solidified his position as a prolific top-order batsman. The Delhi-born player first represented India against Australia in 2013 and his final international appearance was against Bangladesh in December 2022, both in the 50-over format, which is widely regarded as his forte.
"It's crucial to turn the page to progress in life, which is why I am announcing my retirement from both international and domestic cricket," the 38-year-old stated in a video shared on his social media platforms. "I've reminded myself to not feel sad about not playing for India anymore, but to feel proud that I had the opportunity to play for my country."
The left-handed batsman scored 24 international centuries and notably shone in multi-team competitions like the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and the 2015 World Cup. His 85-ball century against Australia in a 2013 Test match was the fastest by a debutant. Dhawan also led India in various limited-overs series when the regular captains needed a break.
