If you've played the original Silent Hill 2 or are familiar with its narrative, it's clear why protagonist James Sunderland might hesitate before entering the eerie town. In the Silent Hill 2 remake, players can actually attempt to turn back, a feature that is tied to one of the game's early Trophies. According to Automaton, this Trophy can be earned right at the beginning when players take control of James. Although there's no option for him to return to his car and drive away, he can walk in the opposite direction of the town. However, this illusion of choice is short-lived, as James soon encounters an invisible barrier preventing further movement. This action grants players the 'No Turning Back Now' achievement.
James's journey to Silent Hill was prompted by a letter from his deceased wife, Mary, suggesting she was alive there. The tunnel leading directly into Silent Hill has been sealed, forcing James to walk from the observation deck before confronting his personal demons—and Pyramid Head, of course. In GameSpot's review of the Silent Hill 2 remake, Mark Delaney praises it as "a meticulous, loving, and stunning recreation of one of horror's most significant efforts." He notes that developer Bloober Team remained faithful to the original game while making calculated risks, supported by input from the original creators.
The deluxe edition of the Silent Hill 2 Remake is now available on PlayStation 5 and PC, with the standard edition set to launch on October 8.
