Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury passed away at the age of 72 on Thursday following a long-term illness, according to his party and hospital staff who spoke to local media.

The political figure had been receiving treatment at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi. He was under the supervision of a group of specialist doctors managing his respiratory infection.

Yechury had taken over as the general secretary of the CPM from Prakash Karat in 2015.
