Sixteen inmates have embraced Islam during the first nine months of 2024, according to Sharjah Police. The conversions took place at the Punitive and Correctional Institution under the Sharjah Police General Command, in collaboration with the Call and Guidance Centre in Dubai, as stated in a Facebook post by the authorities.
The inmates shared that their decision to convert was influenced by a deeper understanding of Islam's values, which emphasize love, mercy, and tolerance. They also highlighted the supportive treatment they received from the officials. The inmates credited religious lectures by specialized imams for enhancing their comprehension of Islamic teachings.
Colonel Abdullah Rashid Alai Al Naqbi, the Acting Director of the Punitive and Correctional Institution, emphasized that the primary objective of the institution is to "reintegrate inmates into society positively after the completion of their sentences." He further explained that this approach aids in helping inmates regain normal lives, correct their behavior, and reduce recidivism rates. The institution also focuses on the psychological and social rehabilitation of inmates, irrespective of their religious beliefs.
