Earlier this month, a report surfaced indicating that Microsoft was establishing a new committee within Activision to steer the future trajectory of the Call of Duty franchise. Now, that future appears to be taking shape, as a recent report suggests that Sledgehammer Games will be spearheading the development of Call of Duty's 2027 release. TheGhostOfHope, a reputable Call of Duty leaker with a track record of accurate predictions, has revealed that Sledgehammer Games' upcoming Call of Duty title will succeed Infinity Ward's 2026 game, which is likely to be 'Modern Warfare 4.' Hope also hinted that Sledgehammer Games' project could either be 'Advanced Warfare 2' or an entirely new concept.
Given Activision's annual release schedule for new Call of Duty games, several of the publisher's smaller development studios are concurrently working on various projects to sustain this pace. Sledgehammer Games has collaborated with other Activision studios on multiple Call of Duty titles while also leading the charge on several of its own, including the upcoming 2023 release, 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.'
Last month's release of 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 6' set new franchise records, according to Activision. The publisher attributes the game's success to its availability on Game Pass, consoles, and PC, which boosted its 30-day launch metrics to unprecedented levels in terms of total players, hours played, and matches contested. The game also introduced innovative features, such as DLC that allows players to embody a shark. Activision introduced Ranked Play for 'Black Ops 6' earlier this month, offering top players the opportunity to compete under the same conditions, maps, modes, and weapon restrictions as the official Call of Duty esports league.
