Sonic fans have just over a month to wait before the third film hits theaters on December 20. The upcoming installment features Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles joining forces to confront the enigmatic Shadow, who is voiced by Keanu Reeves. Additionally, Sonic 3 introduces Gerald Robotnik, Ivo Robotnik's father, with Jim Carrey taking on the dual role of both father and son. However, director Jeff Fowler has revealed that Shadow and Gerald won't be the only fresh faces in the movie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Fowler mentioned that, following the tradition set by the first Sonic movie, a new character will make a brief appearance at the end of Sonic 3. Although he refrained from naming the character, Fowler admitted that choosing who to include was no easy task. 'It's fun to see the fan debates online about who's coming up next, who's going to be teased at the end of the film. We have a lot of the same conversations,' Fowler said. 'We've all got our favorites on the filmmaking side, and we're all making great cases for 'it should be this one or that one.' It is fun to keep that anticipation. This movie is no different in terms of teasing new characters.'
It's worth noting that the movie series has deviated from the chronological order of the games, as Sonic CD preceded Sonic 3, where Knuckles was first introduced. Sonic CD brought Amy Rose, the pink hedgehog with a crush, into the video game universe—though she actually debuted a year earlier in Kenji Terada's Sonic manga. Her design was later updated, including her boots and hammer, for the Dreamcast's Sonic Adventure in 1998.
Although Sonic 4 has not been officially greenlit, the franchise has a plethora of Sonic characters to draw from, ensuring the series can continue for years to come.
