Is that the cheerful sound of a gleaming, rotating ring being obtained, we hear? Yes, indeed it is – and it’s because the trailer for the latest big-screen adventure of a certain wisecracking, trainer-clad blue hedgehog has just been released. Ben Schwartz reprises his role as the voice of Sonic in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, alongside Idris Elba’s Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s Tails – but this time, the animated trio faces a surprising new adversary – and potential ally? This time, Sonic and his friends are up against two mustachioed villains, with a dual, prosthetic-enhanced performance from Jim Carrey as both Dr Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald. Their nefarious plan is to unleash Sonic’s arch-rival Shadow, who, in a stroke of perfect voice-casting, is voiced by Keanu Reeves. After Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails’ trip to Tokyo is abruptly halted and they are captured by the Robotniks, they find themselves teleporting through a kind of black hole to the home of Sonic’s somewhat-adoptive parents, Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter), whom they enlist to help thwart the evil doctors’ scheme to use Shadow’s power to dominate humanity.
That speedy blue hedgehog has certainly come a long way from the old Green Hill Zone, hasn’t he? Sonic The Hedgehog 3 races into cinemas from 27 December.
