Sony has revealed that it has closed Firewalk Studios, the team responsible for the multiplayer shooter game Concord. Furthermore, Concord has been permanently discontinued, extinguishing any prospects of a revival.
"The PvP first-person shooter genre is a highly competitive field that is constantly changing, and regrettably, we did not meet our objectives with this title," Sony stated in an official announcement. "We will apply the insights gained from Concord and continue to enhance our live service capabilities to drive future growth in this sector."
Sony has also shuttered Neon Koi, a mobile studio developing an action game that will no longer proceed. Previously known as Savage Game Studios, Neon Koi was acquired by Sony in 2022.
Last month, Concord director Ryan Ellis reportedly transitioned to a support role as the future of Firewalk remained uncertain. Employees were reportedly brainstorming future projects while others braced for potential layoffs and updated their portfolios. Sony had already undergone a round of layoffs earlier this year.
Concord was launched on August 23 for PS5 and PC but was taken offline on September 6 due to a low player count and reportedly low sales. There were hopes among players and fans that Concord might return in a different form, such as becoming free-to-play, but Sony has now confirmed that the game will not be making a comeback. This marks another significant setback in the ongoing series of mass layoffs and studio closures within the gaming industry.
