Sony has recently disclosed fresh sales figures for the PS5, along with insights into the types of games that will be released for the console in the future.

In its latest financial report, Sony announced that it shipped 3.8 million PS5 consoles during the second quarter of the fiscal year, spanning from July 2024 to September 2024. This represents a 29% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. The cumulative total units shipped now stands at 65.5 million, just short of the 67.5 million PS4 units shipped during a similar timeframe in its lifecycle.

On a positive note, the Game & Network Services division generated approximately $7 billion, marking a 12% year-over-year increase. Sony credits this growth to third-party games on the PS5 platform, including 'an action RPG title from China,' likely referring to Black Myth: Wukong, which sold 18 million copies within its first two weeks of release.

Sony's Network services revenue also saw an 18% year-over-year increase, attributed to subscribers opting for higher tiers of PlayStation Plus and increased subscription prices.

Sony also discussed its upcoming game lineup, confirming a mix of both single-player and multiplayer titles. While acknowledging the success of Helldivers 2, the company also noted lessons learned from the cancellation of The Last of Us multiplayer game and the removal of Concord, which will guide its future live-service plans.

Previously, Sony had stated that there would be no major first-party releases until April 2025. However, the single-player sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yotei, is scheduled for next year, and Haven Studio's live-service game, Fairgames, remains in development.
