Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, is reportedly in talks to portray Lara Croft in Prime Video's forthcoming Tomb Raider series, according to recent reports. Although Deadline has mentioned this development, there has been no official confirmation of a deal so far. Earlier reports suggested that Turner might audition for the role in the series, which is being developed by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of Fleabag. Additionally, Lucy Boynton, who starred in Bohemian Rhapsody, was also considered a strong contender for the role of Lara Croft.
Angelina Jolie, an Oscar winner, previously played Lara Croft in several Tomb Raider films, while Alicia Vikander, another Academy Award recipient, took on the role in the 2018 Tomb Raider movie. The Tomb Raider TV series is being produced for Prime Video, whose parent company, Amazon, is also developing the next Tomb Raider game with Crystal Dynamics. Notably, this new game is not linked to the upcoming series.
Waller-Bridge, renowned for her work on Fleabag and Killing Eve, has also contributed to the script of the James Bond film No Time to Die. She expressed her excitement about drawing from her experiences with Indiana Jones and James Bond, noting that Lara Croft's character was inspired by these iconic figures. The 2018 Tomb Raider film grossed $275 million globally, making it one of the highest-earning video game adaptations. Plans for a sequel with Vikander were in motion, but they were complicated by Amazon's acquisition of MGM.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy The Legend of Lara Croft, an animated Tomb Raider series that debuted on Netflix in October, featuring Hayley Atwell as the voice of Lara Croft. As for the next Tomb Raider video game, details remain scarce, with only the involvement of Crystal Dynamics confirmed.
