The renowned South African shipyard, Southern Wind, has revealed that the sixth iteration of its SW96 sailing yacht series is currently in the construction phase. This 29.8-metre vessel has been commissioned by a North American owner and experienced sailor who sought a yacht designed for both offshore and coastal racing, while maintaining high levels of comfort.
Scheduled to make its regatta debut in 2026, this new yacht continues the collaboration with Nauta Design for both exterior and interior design, and Farr Yacht Design for naval architecture. Distinguishing features of this unit include a dark green metallic hull, setting it apart from its sisterships like Liberty and Nyumba.
The deck layout, equipment, and onboard systems have been customized for primary use in the United States, where the yacht will be based. This customization includes a raised saloon configuration and panoramic windows, complemented by additional hull portlights to enhance interior brightness, particularly in the main saloon and adjacent television area. Accommodation is provided across three guest cabins and an expansive owner's suite with ample storage. Crew quarters are situated aft, including a captain's cabin.
The shipyard has confirmed that the yacht will be built to the highest standards to ensure superior performance across various sea and weather conditions. Notable features include a full carbon hull and deck, high-modulus rigging, twin rudders, and titanium deck fittings. Key specifications include a light displacement of 58.8 tons and a draft ranging from 3.3 to five metres.
This announcement comes amidst a busy period for the yard, following the recent news that construction has commenced on the third unit of its SW108 series.
