In 1984, Spinal Tap cranked comedy up to 11. The rock mockumentary 'This Is Spinal Tap' remains celebrated as one of the greatest spoofs ever, lampooning heavy metal excess and rockstar buffoonery under the direction of the legendary Rob Reiner. It was a legendary debut – and while the 'difficult second album' is notoriously challenging, it's safe to say that the team hasn't rushed into a sequel. No, over 40 years later, the crew is back – with Reiner once again in the director's chair – for 'Spinal Tap II', ready to reveal what the band has been up to for the past four decades.
While details of the sequel are closely guarded, Reiner shared with Empire some tidbits about the current lives of Spinal Tap's members – Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer). 'Nigel has been running a cheese and guitar shop,' the filmmaker reveals in an exclusive for Empire's new Andor Season 2 issue. 'David has been writing music for a true-crime podcast called 'The Trouble With Murder'. And Derek is the curator of a museum of glue. He's also composed a symphony about the devil's bad hairpiece, titled 'Hell Toupée'.'
And rest assured, there will be new songs – get ready for a new Derek Smalls track, 'Rockin' In The Urn'. 'It's all about the fact that even after he's dead, he's still going to be performing,' says Reiner. Rock legends never truly die.
