Square Enix shows no signs of slowing down with its HD-2D remake approach. Although nothing is officially confirmed, Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, expressed his personal preference for the team's next project: Final Fantasy VI. In an interview with Inverse, Hayasaka was asked about what might be next for Square Enix after remaking Dragon Quest III and Live A Live. "While we don't have specific plans yet, I would personally lean towards Final Fantasy VI," Hayasaka said. "Octopath Traveler, the first HD-2D title, was developed with [Final Fantasy VI] as a reference due to its high-quality pixel art. I'm eager to see how the game we looked up to would appear with the HD-2D art style."
The Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake was recently released, and the first two games in the RPG series are set to receive the same treatment next year. Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series, believes that playing the Erdrick trilogy from Dragon Quest III to Dragon Quest I and II will be enjoyable for players. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy VI is widely regarded not only as one of the best RPGs in the Final Fantasy series but also among the best in the genre. Originally released on the SNES in 1994, it is now part of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection.
