Netflix's Emmy Award-winning series, Squid Game, is set to return for Season 2 in December. As part of Netflix's Geeked Week, the streaming giant unveiled a teaser poster and announced that the first trailer would be released today.
According to Netflix, the first season of Squid Game was the most-watched program on the platform in 2021, with 142 million member households tuning in for a total of 1.65 billion watch hours—surpassing even Bridgerton. Season 1 became one of Netflix's most successful shows ever, garnering 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first non-English-language work to be nominated in this category. Lee Jung-jae won the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, marking the first time an Asian actor has won this award for a non-English role. The show also inspired a range of merchandise and a real-life Squid Game competition series, though the latter didn't quite take off as expected.
Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently announced that the series will conclude with a third season, slated for 2025. He also confirmed that Lee will reprise his role as Seong and hinted at the plot.
"Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of season one, returns and joins the game again," Hwang said. "Will he succeed in his quest for revenge? Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The intense conflict between their two worlds will continue into the series finale in season three, which will be released next year."
Squid Game Season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 26.
