The Steam Deck will not follow the annual upgrade cycle seen with the iPhone, according to one of its designers, though a Steam Deck 2 is expected to be released eventually. In an interview with Reviews.org, spotted by The Verge, Steam Deck designer Lawrence Yang stated, "We're not planning to release a new model every year. There's no need for that." He further explained that he believes it would be unfair to customers to offer only minor improvements annually. Yang emphasized, "We want to ensure that any future model represents a significant leap in performance without compromising battery life before we introduce the true second generation of the Steam Deck." This stance aligns with previous comments made by Valve. Last year, multiple Valve employees indicated that a more powerful version of the Steam Deck is still several years away, with the earliest possible release date being late 2025. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais clarified that the current Steam Deck brand strategy involves ensuring that all models can play the same games; Valve intends to maintain this consistency until there is a substantial performance enhancement without a battery life trade-off. Later in the interview, Yang confirmed that Valve is indeed working on a successor to the Steam Deck. Last year, the Steam Deck received an upgrade in the form of the Steam Deck OLED, which improved both battery life and display quality. The device's success has spurred a range of competitors, including the Asus ROG Ally, which gained SteamOS support in August.
