Valve has unveiled the release of Steam Game Recording for all PC and Steam Deck users. This new integrated system for game recording provides users with a range of tools to capture highlights from their gameplay, record extended play sessions, and share them online via the Steam overlay.

Similar to Nvidia's GeForce Experience, Steam Game Recording features a background-recording mode, which can be customized to continuously record footage according to set duration and storage limits. The software also includes a quick-replay function, enabling users to review their gameplay and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, it offers tools to facilitate the search and clipping of gameplay footage. Recordings are saved in MPEG-4 format within a folder designated by the user.

This feature could be particularly appealing to users, as it allows for the placement of markers as reference points. Steam has also provided tools for developers to create "timeline-enhanced" games, which can automatically notify Steam when significant events occur. "These events are displayed along the timeline with details specified by developers," Steam explained.

The timeline-enhanced feature could set Steam apart from other game-recording options, as neither Nvidia nor Windows offer a comparable function within their respective applications. Valve emphasizes that Steam Game Recording has been designed to consume minimal computer resources, leveraging Nvidia or AMD graphics cards to assist with the recording workload.

It's important to note that Steam Game Recording is compatible with any game that supports the Steam Overlay, although it may not function with some older games.
