Manchester City's Stefan Ortega has been included in Germany's 23-man squad for the first time, as coach Julian Nagelsmann announced his Nations League team on Thursday. Alongside Ortega, Stuttgart's Alexander Nuebel and Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann were also called up as goalkeepers. Germany's top goalkeeper, Barcelona's Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, remains sidelined due to a serious knee injury.

The squad also sees the return of Borussia Dortmund midfielders Julian Brandt and Felix Nmecha. Brandt last played for Germany in November, while Nmecha earned his only international cap under former coach Hansi Flick in March 2023. Germany will host Bosnia and Herzegovina in Freiburg on November 16 and travel to Budapest to face Hungary three days later.

The Germans have already secured their place in the Nations League quarter-finals with three wins and a draw, leading Group A3 by five points ahead of the Netherlands and Hungary. Nagelsmann expressed his desire to win the group, ideally in front of their home fans in Freiburg.

Injuries have forced Nagelsmann to restructure his squad, with West Ham's Niclas Fuellkrug, Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling, Bayern's Aleksandar Pavlovic and Leroy Sane, Dortmund's Waldemar Anton, and RB Leipzig's David Raum all missing. Despite these absences, Nagelsmann remains confident in his squad's strength.

According to German media, 18-year-old midfielder Paul Wanner turned down a call-up, opting to stay with the under-21s. Wanner, on loan at Heidenheim from Bayern Munich, is eligible to play for both Austria and Germany at senior level but has yet to declare his international allegiance.
