Steve Martin playfully addressed the rumors about his "Only Murders in the Building" co-stars Martin Short and Meryl Streep dating on Instagram Saturday. The 79-year-old actor shared a photo of the trio from a Glamour article, with a large red X drawn over his own face. Martin refrained from adding a caption, allowing the image to convey the message. In the comments section, fans speculated that Martin's post implied Short, 74, and Streep, 75, are indeed a couple.

"Are you confirming this relationship?!" asked podcast host Ryan Bailey. Another fan commented, "did he just hard launch the relationship?" while another expressed, "If Ms. Streep and Martin Short are an item and this is the announcement, I will be over the moon." A fourth fan wrote, "While Meryl and Martin claim they're just friends, Steve rats them out."

Three days prior to Martin's post, Short and Streep were spotted enjoying a dinner date together in Santa Monica, Calif. The pair arrived at the celebrity hotspot Giorgio Baldi, both smiling. Streep wore a white and blue shirt with navy blue pants, while Short donned a gray suit. They later left together in Streep's white sedan.

Short and Streep, whose "Only Murders" characters developed a romance during the Hulu show's third season, initially sparked dating rumors after appearing cozy at the 2024 Golden Globes in January. At the time, Short's representative dismissed the rumors, stating, "They are just very good friends. Nothing more." Short himself reiterated that he and the "Mamma Mia!" actress were merely "friends" during an August interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

However, the rumors resurfaced when the duo held hands at the "Only Murders" Season 4 premiere in Los Angeles on Aug. 23. Short later praised working with Streep in an interview with Extra, saying, "It's been a friendship that always grows. If you work with someone and love that person."

Short is a widower, having been married to Canadian actress Nancy Dolman, with whom he had three children, Katherine, 40, Oliver, 37, and Henry, 34, from 1980 until her death from cancer in 2010. Streep, on the other hand, was married to Don Gummer, with whom she has four children. Last year, it was reported that Streep and Gummer, 77, had been quietly "separated for more than six years."
