Subaru introduced the current WRX without any plans to release a high-performance STI model. The company has been ambiguous about the future of STI, yet it continues to incorporate STI design elements into other models. Subaru is now launching a special WRX in New Zealand that features a large rear wing, Recaro seats, and the iconic WR Blue exterior color, but without the STI badge. This model is named the WRX Todoroki and brings the six-speed manual transmission to New Zealand, which was previously unavailable.
The Todoroki includes various performance-enhancing upgrades typically found in an STI, but it lacks the STI branding. Mechanical enhancements include six-piston front and two-piston rear Brembo brake calipers with ventilated and drilled discs. Subaru also fine-tuned the car's steering and suspension, optimizing the spring and dampers. It is equipped with matte gray 19-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires.
New Zealanders interested in owning a Todoroki can place a pre-order now. Subaru plans to produce only 10 units, with prices starting at AUD$64,990 ($43,951 at today's exchange rate). Those fortunate enough to secure one will also receive an exclusive STI watch as part of Subaru's celebration of the WRX's 30th anniversary. Despite all these features, there is still no genuine WRX STI from the automaker.
In the US, the closest equivalent is the WRX tS, which offers similar sporty upgrades. However, like the Todoroki, it is not a full-fledged STI. The previous generation of the WRX tS exited the market with 341 horsepower. The current WRX tS uses the same turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in all models, producing a respectable 271 horsepower, but it simply doesn't match the STI experience.
