New details have emerged about the suspect in the shocking murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, including a link to the video game industry. The suspect, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was confirmed by a spokesperson to have worked at Firaxis Games, the studio behind Civilization, as reported by Polygon.
Mangione's alleged LinkedIn profile indicates that he served as a UI programming intern at Firaxis from May 2016 to August 2017, during which he claimed to have fixed over 300 UI bugs in the game. Additionally, in 2016, his LinkedIn page suggests he founded and led 'Upgrade,' a game development and research team at the University of Pennsylvania.
After his internship at Firaxis, Mangione's career appeared to shift away from game development. He was arrested on December 9 after being seen at a McDonald's in Altoona, Pennsylvania. He is charged with the murder of Thompson, which occurred in Manhattan on December 4. Mangione is currently held in Pennsylvania and is expected to be extradited to New York to face trial.
A law enforcement source revealed to The Associated Press that Mangione had a three-page, handwritten letter on him, which stated, 'I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone.' The letter also included, 'I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites had it coming.'
During a court appearance, Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks noted that Mangione had $10,000 in cash when detained, including $2,000 in foreign currency. Authorities also found a black, 3D-printed pistol and a 3D-printed black suppressor in his backpack. Police reports indicate that Mangione became quiet and started shaking when asked if he had recently been to New York.
