Japan's Suzuki Motor announced on Wednesday that it intends to reduce the weight of its small Alto hatchback by 15% over the next ten years, with the goal of decreasing the vehicle's energy consumption and applying these technological advancements to other models. The current weight of the Alto is 680 kg, and the company aims to decrease this by 100 kg.
Tatsuya Matsushita, an executive responsible for Suzuki's automotive technology, explained, "If a vehicle is heavy, we must also increase the size of the battery and motor to achieve a long range and good performance." He noted that smaller motors and batteries could potentially allow Suzuki to reduce the prices of its models, as he spoke at an event discussing the automaker's technological strategy.
Additionally, Suzuki revealed that it is developing software and advanced driver-assist technologies, which it hopes will help alleviate traffic congestion on crowded roads, such as those in India, a significant market for the automaker.
