Sweden announced on Saturday that it is closing its embassy in Beirut due to concerns that the conflict in Gaza might expand into a broader regional war. This follows the urging of thousands of Swedish citizens to evacuate Lebanon. The recent assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders, attributed to Israel, have increased tensions across the region amidst the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom informed Swedish Radio that the foreign ministry has directed its personnel to depart Beirut for Cyprus, with plans to temporarily relocate the embassy. This move is initially scheduled for the month of August but could be prolonged based on the evolving security conditions.
Billstrom emphasized that the ministry is closely observing the situation. The foreign ministry estimates that up to 10,000 Swedish nationals might have visited Lebanon this summer, despite a travel advisory issued since October 2023.
He strongly advised Swedish residents in Lebanon to exit the country using any available means while it is still feasible.
