Sweden announced on Thursday that it has confirmed its first case of mpox, a viral infection transmitted through close contact. Earlier on the same day, the World Health Organization declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has now spread to other countries.
"We have now, also during the afternoon, received confirmation that we have one case in Sweden of the more severe type of mpox, specifically the Clade I," Health and Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed stated at a news conference.
