The Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer has passed away following a severe head injury sustained at the world road race championships in Zurich, according to the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI).
“It is with profound sorrow that the UCI and the organizing committee of the 2024 UCI road world championships in Zurich, Switzerland, have received the devastating news of the death of young Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer,” a statement from the UCI read. “The 18-year-old rider suffered a significant fall on Thursday during the women’s junior road race, resulting in a serious head injury. She was subsequently transported to the hospital by helicopter in a critical state.”
“Muriel Furrer tragically succumbed to her injuries today at Zurich University Hospital,” the statement continued. “With her untimely passing, the international cycling community mourns the loss of a promising talent.”
The UCI and the organizing committee expressed their heartfelt condolences to Muriel Furrer’s family, friends, and the Swiss Cycling federation. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
