WhatsApp users in Pakistan and other users of media applications are facing technical issues, with many reporting problems downloading media files including audio, video messages, and pictures, according to ARY News.

Users are expressing frustration over 'service disruptions'. A common error message they encounter states, "Couldn't download the document. Try again. If the problem persists, try connecting to Wi-Fi." These service disruptions have made it difficult for users to access and share content on the widely used messaging app, as reported by the media outlet.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has addressed the ongoing WhatsApp service issues experienced by cellular users in the country, suggesting a possible "technical glitch" as the cause. A 2024 report from the World Population Review indicates that there are 52.3 million WhatsApp users in Pakistan.

In April, internet users faced significant disruptions when the fiber optic cable connecting Singapore to Pakistan and Europe was damaged in multiple locations. This damage, occurring near Indonesia, impacted internet access in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Additionally, there has been a recent suspension of internet services in Pakistan during Muharram. The Punjab government requested a 'temporary suspension' of social media platforms from July 6-11 during Muharram processions, as reported by Dawn. The home department of Punjab province has recommended suspending popular social media applications such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
