Two individuals lost their lives and six others were injured in a shooting incident that occurred during a Halloween party in Orlando, Florida, according to the regional police department. A teenage suspect has been apprehended in connection with the incident.
The injured victims were promptly transported to Orlando Regional Medical Centre and are currently in stable condition, as confirmed by the police. The shooting, which involved eight individuals, took place around 1am (5GMT) within the city's entertainment district, where hundreds of people were celebrating Halloween.
Officers were dispatched to reports of gunfire at Central Boulevard and Orange Avenue. Shortly thereafter, a second shooting was observed by officers near Washington Street on Orange Avenue, as stated in a police department release. A video posted on Instagram, verified by Reuters, depicted individuals in Halloween costumes standing near the scene as emergency responders tended to the injured lying in the street.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith announced at a press conference that the alleged shooter, a 17-year-old male, had been identified and taken into custody. The police are continuing their active investigation, with the department also evaluating the necessity for heightened patrols over the weekend.
