A 37-year-old man, self-described as a "long shot," recently reached out to the internet with a heartfelt request: he wanted to play Borderlands 4 early. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, he wasn't sure if he would be alive when the game launches next year. His plea caught the attention of Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford, who is now working to make this seemingly impossible dream a reality.
The story began on Reddit last week when Caleb McAlpine posted about his situation. McAlpine revealed that he has been diagnosed with late stage 4 terminal cancer and has less than two years to live, assuming chemotherapy can slow the spread of the disease. Pitchford, aware of McAlpine's condition, has been in contact via email, aiming to arrange something special.
There's now a possibility that McAlpine could get his hands on Borderlands 4 as early as next month. In a Reddit update, McAlpine expressed his gratitude to everyone for their support and shared that Gearbox is working on a plan. If he's able to travel, he will be heading to Texas in mid to late November to meet with the Gearbox team at their headquarters.
Borderlands 4 was officially announced at Gamescom Opening Night Live in August, following months of rumors and speculation. While only a teaser video was released, the game is scheduled for a 2025 launch. Pitchford also hinted that the game features a villain even more dangerous than Handsome Jack. Last month, concept art for a new planet in Borderlands 4 was unveiled. The game is set to follow directly after Borderlands 3 and will be available on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Initially, Borderlands 3 was an Epic Games Store exclusive.
