Earlier this year, a terminally ill Borderlands fan named Caleb McAlpine made a heartfelt request to Gearbox, hoping to play Borderlands 4 before his time runs out. McAlpine, who is battling stage-4 cancer, believed he might have less than two years left to live. Gearbox responded compassionately and granted his wish.
In a recent update on Reddit, McAlpine expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported his plea. He confirmed that Gearbox arranged for him and a friend to travel first class to their headquarters in Frisco, Texas. During the visit, McAlpine met the developers and Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford. He also had the opportunity to share his initial thoughts on Borderlands 4.
"We got to play what they have for Borderlands 4 so far, and it was amazing," McAlpine wrote. "I may not be here when the game is released, but I want to thank everyone for their love and support in making this happen. It was an incredible experience."
Borderlands 4 was officially announced during the opening night of Gamescom in August, but details about the sequel remain scarce. Gearbox has revealed concept art for a new planet and teased a character who is said to be "far more dangerous" than Handsome Jack. The game is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2025, though an exact release date has not been set. Gearbox's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has hinted that Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6 will not be released close to each other. For now, fans will have to wait for more information to surface.
