Although Ron Gilbert returned to the Monkey Island franchise with Return To Monkey Island in 2022, the future of the series receiving another official sequel remains uncertain. However, this hasn't deterred a dedicated group of Monkey Island fans from creating their own unofficial game, The Booze of Monkey Island.
Described as a 'love letter' to the classic Monkey Island games by the small studio Bean Adventure Agency, The Booze of Monkey Island places players in the role of Guybrush Threepwood in a point-and-click adventure. While not a full-length game, it successfully captures the essence of its predecessors. After surviving a shipwreck, Guybrush finds himself back on Booty Island, last seen in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. With his nemesis, LeChuck, back to menace him and his partner Elaine, Guybrush must quickly leave Booty Island. The local bartender agrees to help repair his ship, but only if Guybrush can boost business at the bar.
The Booze of Monkey Island is currently in early access, meaning it's not yet complete, but it already appears polished. Bean Adventure Agency is offering the game for free on its site, emphasizing that this is a not-for-profit venture. However, Disney, the owner of the Monkey Island series through its 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm, may eventually request or demand the game's removal. If you're interested in seeing or playing The Booze of Monkey Island, now is the perfect time.
