If you've ever visited an arcade, chances are you've come across The House Of The Dead, Sega's iconic light-gun shooter. Renowned for introducing running zombies (or more accurately, undead mutants) to the gaming world at the turn of the millennium, this franchise played a pivotal role in the zombie horror gaming craze alongside Resident Evil. The mainline HOTD series has seen five games and two regrettable movies so far. However, according to Deadline, the undead are set to return to the big screen once more, thanks to game-to-film expert Paul W.S. Anderson, the director behind Mortal Kombat, Monster Hunter, several Resident Evil films, and Event Horizon.

Anderson's upcoming movie, which he will produce alongside longtime collaborator Jeremy Bolt, aims to replicate the real-time horror experience of playing a House Of The Dead game. The film will follow the plot of the third game in the series. Anderson, who has been a fan of the "hyper-kinetic, immersive" arcade games since the 90s, shared some details about the plot with Deadline. "We’re basing the movie on House of the Dead Three, which revolves around family conflict amidst the action and scares," Anderson explains. "It's about Lisa Rogan, who is trying to rescue her father, and Daniel Curien, the son of the man responsible for the mutant outbreak, who must confront his father's sins."

Anderson also assures that the film won't require prior knowledge of the series. "It won’t be bogged down with backstory that might alienate newcomers. Everyone will be on the same page," he says. "Viewers will be immediately drawn into the action and learn about the characters and plot as they have 90 minutes to escape the most extreme haunted house they've ever encountered."

While the film is currently slated for a mid-to-late 2025 shoot, the cast remains unknown (though Milla Jovovich, Anderson's wife and Resident Evil star, might be a likely candidate). But with 90 minutes of real-time escape from the most extreme haunted house ever, this film promises to be a thrilling ride. Light-guns at the ready, indeed!
