In life, there are moments when the second becomes the first. In the 2023 draft, the Carolina Panthers executed a significant trade with the Chicago Bears to secure the No. 1 overall pick, selecting Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. Meanwhile, the Houston Texans, with the second pick, chose Ohio State’s CJ Stroud. Fast forward to the end of the season, and the outcomes have been surprising. Young has faced challenges, finding himself as a backup to a 36-year-old veteran, while Stroud, who had an exceptional rookie season, was crowned the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The 2024 draft saw another quarterback-centric top two picks. The Bears, leveraging the pick acquired from the Panthers, selected USC’s Caleb Williams at No. 1. Following them, the Washington Commanders picked LSU’s Jayden Daniels at No. 2. This selection marked a turning point for a once-struggling franchise. Williams has performed well within the limitations of the Bears’ offense, but after the first four weeks of the 2024 season, Daniels has not only emerged as the best rookie quarterback in his class but also as one of the best rookie quarterbacks in recent memory.

Daniels’ numbers have been extraordinary. His efficiency on passes of 10-19 air yards is unparalleled, completing 18 of 21 passes for 294 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, a passer rating of 134.6, and a passing EPA of +29.0, second only to Brock Purdy. On deeper passes, his performance has been solid, completing two of eight passes for 82 yards, one touchdown, one interception, a passer rating of 69.8, and a passing EPA of +0.4. While the deep ball remains a work in progress, Daniels’ ability to learn and adapt is evident.

Washington’s 42-14 victory over the Arizona Cardinals was a significant moment for Daniels, who spent his first three collegiate seasons at Arizona State before transferring to LSU, and for Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who previously coached the Cardinals. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn acknowledged the importance of the win, presenting Kingsbury with the game ball. Daniels’ performance was a testament to his rapid growth and Kingsbury’s effective coaching.

Despite being a rookie, Daniels’ maturity and ability to learn from mistakes are striking. His understanding of the game is advanced, akin to that of seasoned veterans like Patrick Mahomes or Matthew Stafford. Daniels’ 17-yard completion to fellow rookie Luke McCaffrey against the Cardinals showcased his unique abilities. His combination of physical talent and mental acuity makes him a formidable player.

As Quinn noted, Daniels’ preparation and focus are exceptional, ensuring that he is unlikely to be a short-lived sensation. His consistent performance and rapid learning curve suggest a long and successful NFL career ahead.
