Let’s not fool ourselves – no one’s truly relaxed right now. With the US election just hours away and the race tighter than ever, finding inner peace is a challenge – especially when you’re glued to the polls. However, some might find comfort in the idea that the outcome could finally answer a long-standing question: Can The Simpsons really foresee the future? The iconic animated series has gained a reputation for its episodes and jokes that seem to come true with eerie precision. Whether you attribute this to a bizarre “predictive” power or not, it’s hard to ignore the show’s uncanny ability to anticipate real-life events.

Take the 1990 episode where people protested Michelangelo’s “David” for its nudity, mirroring a real-life incident in Florida where a school principal resigned over a lesson featuring the statue. Then there’s the 1994 episode 'Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy', which seems to have predicted the Barbie frenzy linked to Greta Gerwig’s film and Donald Trump’s indictment. The 1996 episode ‘Homerpalooza’ foresaw hip-hop group Cypress Hill performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, a prediction that came true this year. And who could forget the 1998 episode that accurately predicted Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox? The list is extensive.

Perhaps the most notorious example is the 2000 episode ‘Bart To The Future’, which mentioned Donald Trump as a past president. In the episode, Lisa, now president, remarks, “As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.” After Trump became the 45th President in 2017, the show’s opening chalkboard gag read: “Being right sucks.” The episode gained new attention when Kamala Harris became the first female US Vice President, as Lisa was depicted wearing a purple suit and pearls strikingly similar to Harris’s inauguration outfit. Now, with Trump announcing his 2024 presidential run, the same episode is making headlines again, reinforcing its predictive reputation.

Fans are now speculating that the episode’s track record might mean Kamala Harris will win the upcoming election. “We all know that The Simpsons has this uncanny ability to predict the future,” wrote one social media user. “In an episode, Lisa becomes president and she mainly wears a purple suit and pearls, similar to Kamala Harris's outfit in her vice president inauguration. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.” Another added: “The Simpsons predict Kamala Harris will be President.” “If The Simpsons ever really predicted the future, let it be this time,” commented a third.

We’ll soon discover if there’s more to The Simpsons’ predictions than Matt Groening’s philosophy. And perhaps this time, that chalkboard will read: “Being right rocks!”
