We've witnessed some extraordinary SUVs throughout the years, but this one takes the cake. This 2004 Porsche Cayenne was meticulously crafted to slide sideways, yet it still accommodates four passengers comfortably. There's even a high-end stereo system powerful enough to drown out the roar of the V-8 engine and the screeching tires.
Larry Chen introduces us to this remarkable vehicle, which he encountered recently at a Gridlife event held at Lime Rock Park. The Cayenne was built by TSH Auto in Toronto, and its original Porsche V-8 engine has been replaced with a robust 6.0-liter LS2 Chevy small block, topped with a supercharger. The engine retains its stock bottom end and, with a modest seven pounds of boost, delivers 530 horsepower to the rear wheels (the AWD system has been removed). Torque is transmitted through a BMW-sourced transmission from an E92 335i. The Cayenne's stock rear differential is still in place, which is quite fortunate.
The Cayenne has been lowered by nine inches—the stock Porsche subframe is barely an inch off the ground. Custom front knuckles with a bespoke angle kit provide sufficient steering angle for impressive sideways maneuvers. A custom handbrake was fabricated to connect with Wilwood calipers at the rear. The front brakes remain stock from the Cayenne, and all brakes are housed within 22-inch wheels. Yes, 22-inch wheels on a drift car.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this build is the interior. The full interior remains intact, surrounded by a stunning roll cage that doesn't interfere with the plastic trim. The front seats are Bentley originals, while the rear seats are basic racing seats. Each seat is equipped with a five-point harness for safety. When the Cayenne isn't shredding tires, it boasts a custom stereo system with more speakers than a sales managers' conference.
We could continue, but instead, let's just watch the video again. And again. And one more time...
