Since Halo: Combat Evolved made its debut on the original Xbox in 2001, Steve Downes has been the sole actor to voice Master Chief in the subsequent video games. Actress Jen Taylor has enjoyed the same enduring presence as Master Chief's AI companion, Cortana. However, according to Downes, both he and Taylor were temporarily replaced by different performers during the development of Halo 4. Downes recently recounted the story of his recasting on his YouTube channel. As he recalls, neither he nor Taylor were aware that 343 Industries—which succeeded Bungie in overseeing the Halo franchise—had already selected new actors for Master Chief and Cortana. Downes reports that testers expressed dissatisfaction with the new voices, feeling disconnected from the iconic characters. Before Downes could reclaim his role, he had to audition once more for the part he had made famous. Since then, both Downes and Taylor have remained steadfast in their roles, with Taylor even reprising her role as Cortana in the Halo TV series on Paramount+. In response to Downes' story, Generalkidd shared a clip from a Halo 4 build featuring noticeably different voices for Master Chief and Cortana. Generalkidd suggests that this might have been a temporary track and not directly related to Downes' account of the actors initially chosen to replace them.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection recently marked its 10th anniversary, while Halo 2 celebrated its 20th anniversary as fans finally got to play the game's E3 2003 demo. 343 Industries has also rebranded itself as Halo Studios, announcing that future Halo titles will be developed using Unreal Engine 5.
