The Witcher 4 made a strong impression with its first cinematic trailer, unveiled during The Game Awards. Among the highlights, it was revealed that the game will center around Ciri as the main character. CD Projekt Red has since discussed their decision to focus on Ciri and confirmed that Geralt will also appear in the game, albeit in an unspecified role.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba explained to PC Gamer that it was a "natural choice" to tell the story of The Witcher 4 through Ciri's eyes, building on the narrative established in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. "There's plenty of room for her and for us to build on top of [her]. There's so much room for exploration, and because she's such a nuanced character, the beginning of her journey gives us freedom and so many opportunities to dig in and use [that] for good," he said.
Ciri was a playable character in certain parts of The Witcher 3, and executive producer Gosia Mitręga noted that she is "less defined as a character," which provides the developers with ample opportunities for storytelling. Geralt, the protagonist of the previous Witcher games, will also feature in The Witcher 4. Kalemba emphasized that Geralt is significant to both the developers and Ciri, so his presence is "definitely" assured. His voice was heard at the end of the recent trailer, but no further details have been revealed.
"I can't tell you more, but I think the promise is enough. But we believe that this journey, this new saga, this new trilogy is definitely for her," Kalemba said. The Witcher 4 marks the beginning of a new trilogy of Witcher games, which are being developed alongside other projects at CD Projekt, including a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and a Witcher remake.
Recently, Geralt voice actor Doug Cockle retracted his earlier comments about Geralt's role in The Witcher 4 after the studio "slapped" him for discussing it prematurely. The game's stunning CG trailer, created by Platige Image, was pre-rendered using a custom version of Unreal Engine 5 running on an "unannounced Nvidia GeForce RTX GPU." The trailer, which uses assets and models from the game, serves as a mood piece, aiming to showcase the kind of experience the game aspires to deliver.
