After delivering a spine-chilling, satanic, Silence Of The Lambs-esque experience with the Maika Monroe and Nic Cage collaboration Longlegs just a few months ago, horror's rising star is poised to test his genre credentials with his next project—a Stephen King adaptation! Based on the renowned horror writer's short story of the same name, Perkins' The Monkey will feature Theo James in the dual role of Hal and Bill, twin brothers whose lives are horrifically disrupted by a cursed toy monkey. If the premise sounds wild, the teaser below confirms it:
"Whoever controls it, controls life and death," intones an unnamed narrator about the titular cursed toy in this decidedly cheeky new teaser, "and those deaths are really messed up." Indeed! Electrocution via TV? Check. Flaming prams? Check. Flaming people? Check. A blood-soaked Theo James, er, regurgitating a severed finger? Check, check, and triple-check! Although this may only be a minute-and-a-half glimpse into the unholy terrors Perkins has in store, its wild horror elements and quirky humor have already won us over. And that's before considering the stellar cast, including Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, and Schitt's Creek favorite Sarah Levy, all set to partake in this twisted death fest.
Here's the official synopsis: "When twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them." With James Wan on board as producer, Perkins directing, and one of King's best lesser-known short stories as the source material, we're eagerly anticipating The Monkey whenever it hits cinemas in our region. And, if you're one of our American readers, you'll be able to join in the "Ooh... ooh... ahhh... ahhh!" excitement when the movie arrives in multiplexes stateside on 21 February.
