A month before the Covid-19 pandemic swept the globe in 2020, Thirdy Ravena was basking in the glow of Filipino pride, having played a pivotal role in Mighty Sports' historic victory at the Dubai International Basketball Championship. Yet, it wasn't just the triumph that resonated with Ravena; the thunderous applause from Filipino fans in Dubai remains etched in his memory.
"I was taken aback because I had no idea there were so many Filipinos in the UAE. It was an incredible experience, a truly amazing atmosphere," Ravena shared with City Times.
Fast forward four years, and Ravena has emerged as the face of Dubai Basketball. The UAE's inaugural professional basketball club has just embarked on its journey in the ABA League, a prestigious European championship, with their maiden match against the legendary Red Star Belgrade at Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday.
Dubai Basketball boasts elite players from Europe, including former NBA star Davis Bertans from Latvia. However, it's Ravena who is front and center in every social media post, as the club aims to capitalize on the legendary Filipino passion for basketball.
Born into a family of renowned athletes, Ravena is thrilled to be part of Dubai's entry into European basketball. In an interview with City Times, the 27-year-old discussed his aspirations, the advantages and challenges of coming from a sporting family, and his eagerness to experience Dubai's adrenaline-pumping activities.
Ravena's journey is not just a testament to his talent but also to his resilience. His story is an inspiration to many, urging them to believe in their dreams and ignore the naysayers.
