At this stage in his career, Tom Cruise has accomplished almost everything imaginable. The star of the Mission: Impossible series has piloted Boeing fighter jets, climbed the world's tallest building, held his breath underwater for an astonishing six minutes, and even jumped off a cliff on a motorcycle. Somehow, he managed to convince audiences that his 5'7" frame could embody the towering Jack Reacher. However, one genre the Hollywood legend has yet to explore is horror (Interview With The Vampire doesn't count!). According to Deadline, that's about to change as Cruise is reportedly teaming up with his American Made and Edge Of Tomorrow director, Doug Liman, for a new supernatural thriller called Deeper.
A report from Roger Friedman's Showbiz411, confirmed by Deadline, states that Liman and Cruise are partnering with Warner Bros. to produce their third (possibly fourth, considering their upcoming SpaceX movie) collaboration. Liman himself revealed this exciting news during a recent New York screening of the documentary Gaucho Gaucho, telling Friedman that he's keen on making a "scary movie," noting that neither he nor Cruise has ventured into that genre before. While details are scarce, the film is said to revolve around an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force during a deep dive into an unexplored trench.
Cruise and Liman are the latest in a line of talent trying to bring Deeper to life. Previously, Bradley Cooper and Kornél Mundruczó, as well as Idris Elba and Baltasar Kormákur, were attached to the project, which has been in development since 2016. With Cruise potentially wrapping up his Mission: Impossible saga with The Final Reckoning, and Liman fresh from directing this year's The Instigators and Road House, it seems the film might finally find the perfect duo to bring it to the big screen. If we see Tom Cruise in a spacesuit or snorkeling gear anytime soon, we'll know exactly what the daring actor is up to next. And yes, Edge Of Tomorrow 2: Live, Die, Repeat And Repeat is definitely on the horizon!
