If you're a Tom Hardy enthusiast, you've always craved to witness him wreak genuine chaos. Yes, throughout his career, he's orchestrated turmoil, inflicted agony, and showcased memorable strength – but you've never seen him truly go all-out. That's set to change. Next year marks the release of HAVOC, the latest film from The Raid maestro Gareth Evans, who returns after the adrenaline-pumping exploits of Gangs Of London, poised to propel Hardy into the realm of hardcore action icons. The film has been long in the making – partly due to additional photography that necessitated the availability of a cast and crew of in-demand fighters. But as Evans assures, HAVOC is worth the anticipation. “It’s had a profound impact on the film,” he shares with Empire about the extra shooting. “It enabled me to refine it, making it what it was always meant to be: a blistering, fast-paced action-thriller with nods to the Hong Kong cinema that shaped my youth.” Sounds unmistakably like a Gareth Evans film.
Indeed, rest assured that HAVOC will deliver precisely what you expect from a Hardy-Evans collaboration. “When it comes to a film titled HAVOC, with me and Tom Hardy, we deliver on the action front,” the director asserts. “That’s our primary focus. But with Tom, you also get an intensely powerful central performance and a deeply developed character. There’s much more beneath the surface.” Specifically, beneath the surface of Hardy’s character, Walker – a cop assigned to rescue the nephew of Forest Whitaker’s mayor. It won’t be a walk in the park. “He’s essentially on a clean-up mission,” Evans elaborates, “navigating this fractured city to reach him first. That’s the driving mission he embarks on, and given it’s my film, things don’t go smoothly for a long while.” Brace for impact.
