Tommy Fleetwood spearheads a strong contingent of Dubai-based golfers at the Olympic Men's Golf event at Le Golf National in Paris, France. Joining the British golfer are Adrian Meronk of Poland, Guido Migliozzi for Italy, Thomas Detry from Belgium, Thorbjorn Oleson representing Denmark, and Gaganjeet Bhullar from India, who holds a Dubai Golden Visa. The competition kicks off on Thursday, August 1st, marking the third occasion golf has been included in the Olympics since its revival in 2016. The increasing importance of the Olympic golf event is evident as it clashes with no other major golf tournaments on the PGA Tour DP World Tour or LIV Golf. The 72-hole individual stroke-play event features defending champion Xander Schauffele (US), who has been in top form after winning both the US PGA Championship and The Open recently. Pan Cheng-tsung (Taipei), the Bronze Medalist from the 2020 Olympics, is the only other returning medalist. This year's 60-player field lacks other past Olympic podium finishers. Dubai's influence is significant with six players having strong ties to the city. Tommy Fleetwood, a Dubai resident, ranks highest at number 14 in the Official World Golf Ranking, seventh in the Race to Dubai, and 30th in the FedEx Cup Standings. Thomas Detry, who has had a solid season in the US, stands at 57th in the OWGR and 32nd in the FedEx Cup Standings. Thorbjorn Oleson is 85th on the OWGR and 29th in the Race to Dubai. Guido Migliozzi, coached by Peter Cowen, has risen to 131st in the OWGR and 10th in the Race to Dubai after winning the BMW International on the DP World Tour. Gaganjeet Bhullar, an 11-time winner on the Asian Tour, is eager for the experience. Oleson was the sole player among the six to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics, while Fleetwood, Detry, Migliozzi, and Meronk are competing in their second Olympics, having previously played in Japan. Bhullar makes his Olympic debut. Unlike other golf tournaments, there is no 36-hole cut in the Olympics; all 60 players will play all four rounds. In case of a tie after four rounds, a playoff will determine the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals. In Tokyo 2021, a seven-way playoff for the bronze medal saw Chinese Taipei's C.T. Pan triumph on the fourth extra hole, besting contenders like Rory McIlroy, Colin Morikawa, and Hideki Matsuyama. McIlroy later remarked, "I never tried so hard in my life to finish third."
