Torrential rains in Pakistan have led to floods that claimed at least 30 lives this week, according to authorities on Friday. The city of Lahore, the nation's second-largest, experienced its heaviest rainfall in over four decades.
The monsoon season has triggered floods and landslides throughout South Asia recently, with at least 195 fatalities and nearly 200 people missing in a neighboring Indian disaster. Heavy rains in northern Pakistan resulted in flooding, building collapses, and increased the risk of electrocution.
"Lahore has once again broken its 44-year-old rainfall record," stated officials from the northeastern Punjab province, where six deaths were recorded and authorities warned of impending flash floods in the south. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 12 children were among the 24 casualties from the recent rains and floods, according to Anwar Shehzad, a spokesperson for the province's disaster management agency.
Global bodies like the United Nations consider Pakistan one of the most susceptible countries to extreme weather and climate change. In 2022, floods devastated the nation, killing over 1,700 people and displacing millions.
