Tottenham Hotspur has announced its intention to appeal the suspension imposed on Rodrigo Bentancur for making a racist remark about teammate Son Heung-min. The Premier League club made this decision on Wednesday following the Uruguayan's seven-game ban. Bentancur had contested the charge, but an independent regulatory commission upheld the accusation, leading to the suspension and a 100,000 pounds ($126,660) fine for the 27-year-old.

"While we acknowledge the guilty verdict against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we consider the subsequent penalty to be excessively harsh," the club stated in an official release. "Rodrigo will continue to be ineligible for domestic competitions until the appeal process is concluded."

In June, during an episode of the Uruguayan television show Por La Camiseta, host Rafa Cotelo inquired about a Tottenham player's shirt. Bentancur responded with, "Sonny's?" and added, "Or one of Sonny’s cousins as they all look more or less the same." As a result of his suspension, Bentancur will miss crucial league matches against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea, among others. Additionally, he will be unavailable for the League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United.
