A tragic accident on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway in Unnao district, Uttar Pradesh, claimed the lives of eighteen individuals and left more than nineteen injured when a double-decker sleeper bus collided with a milk container on Wednesday at 5.15 am.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak addressed the incident, stating, "Injured individuals are being transferred to more advanced hospitals. All nearby hospitals to Unnao are on alert." He further noted, "Most of the injured are from Bihar, and we are in communication with the Bihar government. The causes of the accident will be determined through investigation; our current focus is on ensuring proper medical care for the injured." Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his hope for the quick recovery of the victims.
On X, CM Adityanath commented, "The loss of life in the road accident in Unnao district is profoundly saddening. My sympathies go out to the families of the deceased. Officials from the district administration have been directed to arrive at the scene and expedite relief efforts." Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs200,000 from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund to the next-of-kin of each deceased in the Unnao mishap, with Rs50,000 to be provided to the injured.
The double-decker sleeper bus, en route from Motihari, Bihar, to Delhi, struck the milk tanker from behind on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway near Gadha Village in the Behtamujawar Police Station area. Upon being informed of the incident, police promptly arrived at the scene to initiate rescue operations.
