It’s been quite some time since Tron fans last immersed themselves in the Grid. When Tron: Ares debuts in cinemas next year, it will have been 15 years since Tron: Legacy reinvigorated the 1982 digital-game sci-fi narrative for a contemporary audience. This time, the franchise is set to redefine itself once more – less as a direct continuation of the previous films and more as the inception of something entirely new, infused with the bio-digital essence of its predecessors. This includes a new lead character in Jared Leto’s Ares – a program that transitions from the Grid to the real world – and a fresh auditory experience courtesy of Nine Inch Nails, drawing inspiration from Daft Punk’s Legacy soundtrack.

As director Joachim Rønning explains to Empire, the transition from Daft Punk to Nine Inch Nails reflects the direction Ares is heading. “With Nine Inch Nails composing the music, this installment will be a bit grittier, a bit more industrial,” the filmmaker elaborates. “It’s crucial for me to juxtapose The Grid and the real world. In this regard, Nine Inch Nails is perfectly suited to this new Tron universe we are crafting.” If this suggests a descent into darker themes, rest assured that amidst the AI-versus-reality conflicts, the heart of Ares will remain deeply human. “What I always seek in any story is a robust emotional core,” Rønning notes. “This film will likely be more emotionally resonant than people anticipate. It’s about the price of being human.” Let the game commence.
