On Monday morning, former US President Donald Trump's website displayed an image of him with a bloodied face, encouraging supporters to donate to his campaign and unite in the spirit of unity and peace after the weekend's shooting.
The website directed potential donors to a fundraising page on WinRed, featuring a black and white photo taken by an Associated Press photographer, which Trump has called 'iconic.' The image shows the Republican candidate with blood streaked across his face and his fist raised in defiance, after being shot in the upper right ear at a rally in Pennsylvania. The caption 'FEAR NOT' was written in uppercase letters.
Below the image, a message read: 'Unity. Peace. Make America Great Again.' The page also included Trump's signature and offered various donation options. In an interview with the New York Post published late Sunday, Trump discussed the images taken immediately after he was shot, including the one on his campaign website.
'A lot of people say it's the most iconic photo they've ever seen,' Trump was quoted as saying. 'They're right, and I didn't die. Usually, you have to die to have an iconic picture.' Trump, who is running against Democratic US President Joe Biden in the November election, was shot by a 20-year-old man with a semi-automatic rifle at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, according to authorities.
One Trump supporter at the rally was killed, two others were wounded, and the suspect was shot dead by security agents. The FBI is investigating the shooting as an assassination attempt. Leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties, including Trump and Biden, called for unity and calm in the deeply divided country following the shooting.
A GoFundMe campaign supported by Trump for the victims of the shooting at the former president's rally had raised over $3.5 million by the end of Sunday.
