US President-elect Donald Trump has pledged unwavering support for Israel and intends to dismiss Biden's occasional critiques.
On Monday, Trump warned Gaza militants of severe consequences if hostages are not released before he assumes office. This warning follows extensive diplomatic efforts by the outgoing Biden administration, which have yet to secure a deal that would end Israel's war in Gaza and free hostages taken 14 months ago.
"If the hostages are not released by January 20, 2025, the date I take office as President of the United States, there will be severe repercussions in the Middle East, and those responsible for these human rights violations will face unprecedented consequences," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
Trump has vowed steadfast support for Israel and aims to eliminate Biden's occasional criticisms, while also expressing his desire to broker significant deals on the global stage.
Hamas launched the deadliest attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in 1,208 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures. Militants seized 251 hostages during the assault, 97 of whom are still held in Gaza, including 35 reportedly deceased.
Israel's retaliatory campaign has claimed 44,429 lives in Gaza, according to figures from the territory's health ministry, which the United Nations deems reliable.
