A Turkish Olympic shooting silver medallist, Yusuf Dikec, expressed his indifference towards the sudden surge in his popularity on Thursday, following his distinctive casual style that made him an overnight internet sensation. Dikec and his partner, Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, secured silver for Turkey in the mixed team 10m air pistol on Tuesday, falling short to Serbia in the gold medal match. However, it was Dikec's relaxed demeanor that garnered as much attention as the outcome, with the shooter sporting standard glasses, a team T-shirt, and his left hand casually tucked in his pocket. Unlike other athletes in the event, Dikec did not use specialized equipment such as headphones, special lenses, or a hat, making him appear like an ordinary individual or even a hitman competing at the Olympics.
The French embassy in Turkey celebrated Dikec's victory and style on X, posting in Turkish, "Be cool like Yusuf Dikec. Congratulations on winning the silver medal in such a cool way." Other users likened him to James Bond, with some memes adding a cigarette to his mouth to highlight his laid-back attitude. In an interview with Turkish channel TGRT Haber, Dikec revealed his unique shooting technique of keeping both eyes open, a rarity in the sport. He attributed their success to extensive preparation and hard work, stating, "Success doesn't come with your hands in your pockets."
Social media users also called for equal recognition for Tarhan, who similarly adopted a casual stance with her hand in her pocket, albeit wearing headphones and a visor. Turkish Sports Minister Osman Askin Bak congratulated Dikec on social media, recreating his iconic pose. Dikec and Tarhan celebrated their victory at the Champions Park at the Trocadero complex in Paris, proudly displaying their medals and a Turkish flag. Despite being 51 years old and having competed in every Summer Olympics since 2008, Dikec remains optimistic about future Games, aiming for a gold medal in Los Angeles in 2028.
